Hacker is nothing more than a most knowledge person, Who knows every trick and bugs of every platform or application.

He or she always sets trap on internet which attract to new internet users or most common visitors, There are many source through hacker can record everybody activities,

Like spoofers uploaded on web.
Video chats by groups on any messenger.
upload attractive torrent, files or videos for download.
weak security or vulnerability of operating system,

These are basic trap sets by Attacker / Hacker, Many things he can do,
for prevention use Tight security, Firewall Enable, latest definitions of security product.

Most of the static/simple/buggy scripts websites get hacked just to gain the full control over the server/account and then try to hack the another server which is their main target. This helps hackers to keep their idenetitiy safe.

And the recent famous example is Sony's Playstation, hackers were behind it from Feburary 2011 and Sony noticed an intrusion on 19th April 2011. All the data which contained members all information including credit card,email id and pasword were stolen by the hackers. Hackers also attempted to do some transactions using the credit cards and most of the banks detected it as malicious transaction and blocked such credit cards. Sony is till in a pain to fix the loophole as it is not so easy and will also cost them more money.

So you never know when and why your site will get hacked...

First. I dont have a hacker like friend, and i dont like hacking (I HATE HACKERS), but like you said being friend of a hacker means that you can win or maybe the hacker can give you some cheats.

There are thee types of hackers Black hat, White hat and Grey Hat.

If a White Hat hacker's is good person who helps to everyone for protecting system and find weakness or patch it, Also Finds a vulnerability in a security system.
Ex: If website under attack then they will inform the owner immediately.

A Black Hat hacker is attacker who find exploit vulnerability or exploit it in market, If they find a fault then they will immediately exploit the site for there own beneficial gain.
Ex: Advertising and infecting other computers with "viruses" to gain access of server and more sites.

Whereas if a Grey hat hacker its combination of a Black Hat and a White Hat Hackers, They finds a fault like at the time, They may offer to repair your system for a small charges.

So a hacker can be of many different types from protecting systems by informing the owners or Exploiting and stealing data.
